Occupational Orientation of „Disadvantaged" Youths. The Relevance of the Social Background in the German Transition SystemThis article focuses on the question of the relevance of social background for occupational orientation in the German transition system („Übergangssystem"). Based on the panel study „The change in vocational orientations of pupils in the transition system" (school year 2011 / 12), the authors demonstrate that aspects of the pupils' social background, such as their parents' education and vocational qualifications as well as their employment status, influence the process of career choice. The overall picture shows that the point in time that pupils start looking for an apprenticeship varies according to social background. In a nutshell, the successful transition from obligatory schooling to vocational training („erste Schwelle") does not primarily depend on the successful completion of the transition system, but rather on the respective social background of the pupils
